My Christmas list for all of my childhood consisted of "more barbie movies if there are any", so I genuinely have seen all of these and the memories that came flooding back were insane. the attitude of the director towards the super mario bros. movie really encapsulated how mainstream adults viewed video games for years. potential consumers were barely worth their money. he said he didn't want to be "shackled" by the ip he was making a movie out of. he made this movie with open contempt for what it was about and who it was for. it wasn't that they saw video games as a less worthy form of media; it was that they didn't see it as media in the first place. they saw it as beeps and boops for which no continuity existed. to them it was identical to making a feature length film about stretch armstrong, and when we didn't like it, they'd be like 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄 jesus, sorry for trying to give your stupid thing some dignity. they were colonizing an entire medium, it was wild to behold. the resentment was such that consumers would find out a studio had gotten the rights to the fuckin legend of zelda or something, and they'd get angry. they'd subsequently discover that the studio was also angry, because they now had the rights to the legend of zelda. as if anyone told them to do it in the first place. if harry potter had been a video game instead of books, the first harry potter movie would have been about the titular harry potter, a fast talking canadian orphan who invented magic along with his best friend, the rapping horse hermione stranger. dumbledore isn't even a guy in it, it's the name of harry's childhood treehouse or something. and actually, now that i'm typing this, that movie would absolutely rip and i would watch it right now.
